The movie and book portray Heathcliff in very different ways, where in the book Heathcliff is a terrible and ruthless terror with a lust for revenge. Where as in the movie he is hurt and abused which justifies his actions for revenge as he does them in a very calm and intelligent manor.
In the book Wuthering heights by Emily Bronte Heathcliff is depicted as a much more brutal and violent person then the film, as he constantly abuses people in his company, beating Hareton and throwing a knife at Isabella. He is also a much darker character in the book and seems almost psychopathic in his intentions in the book it says "I'm trying to settle how I shall pay Hindley back. I don't care how long I wait, if I can only do it at last. I hope he will not die before I do!" (Bronte Chapter 7, 69). Heathcliff is a very ruthless person in the book, which is kinda lost in the film as they create a sort of pity for him.
In the film Heathcliff portrays the roll of a wounded man more because he is a good person, smart( he figures out which horse is the true pure breed and then gives it to Catherine) , he is hated by Hidley for no reason accept racism because he is of a darker skin colour. This creates a sort of pity for Heathcliff in the film and we can accept some of the terrible things he does because he was the one who was originally hurt.
